Eighteen-year-old singer songwriter Lindsey Jordan, also known as Snail Mail, has become a beloved artist in the indie punk rock scene. Jordan released her album Lush, this past June and it has received critical acclaim.
At only 18 years old singer-songwriter Lindsey Jordan has already received critical success being called a prodigy by Billboard. After dozens of successful performances, Jordan is taking the next step in her career by releasing her debut album entitled Lush. People who have heard the album have reacted overwhelmingly positively to it; including sites like Fader dubbing her single “Pristine” “an indie rock masterpiece”. At five years old, Lindsey Jordan started her passion for music with intensive classical guitar lessons. She first played for her local church, school plays, and a jazz band. All key experiences for this rising singer-songwriter.
Jordan started going by the stage name Snail Mail after getting involved in the Baltimore DIY punk scene. It was during this time Jordan released her first EP, Habit, which was critically praised and attracted more than a dozen label offers. Like any musician, she is influenced by pioneers in her industry. Most of her inspiration comes from guitarists Kurt Vile, Steve Gunn, and Mark Kozelek. Snail Mail is often cited as part of the new wave of young female indie rock singer-songwriter’s like Sheer Mag, Soccer Mommy, and Lucy Dacus. Besides being part of the new wave, this singer-songwriter is also an inspirational figure to her LGBTQ community.
Jordan identifies herself as a gay woman. She does not believe that her gender and sexuality should overshadow her music, nor should her music just be for a certain group of listeners. “I would love people to just listen and not be obsessed with the fact that I’m a girl, or that I’m gay, or eighteen (years of age). Being a girl is not a genre.”
Jordan’s music certainly speaks for itself with its unique style and tone that keeps listeners mesmerized. An eighteen-year-old advocate, feminist, and an incredibly talented singer-songwriter with a bright future ahead of her, we cannot wait to hear what else is to come!
