Female Country Artists ACM Awards Snub Raises Concerns
For the second year in a row, female country artists ACM Awards were excluded from the Entertainer of the Year category. Reba McEntire announced the 2019 nominees and appeared visibly disappointed. She said, “Well, it doesn’t make me very happy because we’ve got some very talented women who are out there working their butts off. I’m missing my girlfriends on this.”
Women in Country Music Missing From Top Honors
Household names like Kacey Musgraves, Miranda Lambert, and Carrie Underwood dominate the country scene. However, none received nominations for Entertainer of the Year. According to Esquire.com, the selection considers radio airplay, music sales, video performance, live ticket sales, artistic merit, songwriting, and contributions to the industry.
Country Music Gender Gap in Radio and Ticket Sales
Two major factors limit female representation. First, radio airplay is heavily male-dominated. While streaming dominates other genres, country music listeners rely on radio the most. This imbalance keeps women off the charts; only two women appeared in the Billboard Country top 20 this week.
Second, touring revenue reflects this gap. Kenny Chesney had the ninth-highest grossing tour last year, yet his album sales were outsold by Carrie Underwood’s Cry Pretty and Kacey Musgraves’ Golden Hour. This shows how female country artists ACM Awards nominations do not always reflect overall artistic success.
Encouraging Change in Country Music Awards
Following the 2019 Grammys, which featured more women than ever, the lack of female nominees at the ACMs is disappointing. Until selection criteria shift to include album performance, songwriting, and artistic merit, women are likely to remain underrepresented.
