Artists Take a Stand Against COVID Misinformation on Spotify, While Girl Pow-R Inspires Hope
Neil Young Leads the Charge Against COVID Misinformation
In late January, folk legend Neil Young made headlines by requesting that Spotify remove his entire music catalogue. The reason? Young was protesting what he described as dangerous COVID-19 misinformation spread by Spotify’s leading podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience. Concerned for Spotify’s influence over millions of impressionable listeners, Young warned about the potentially life-threatening consequences of what he viewed as false and misleading content.

Spotify quickly pulled Young’s music from its platform. However, Young left the door open to returning if the controversial podcast were to be removed. Notably, this is not the first time The Joe Rogan Experience has faced criticism for its controversial takes.
Joni Mitchell and Other Artists Join the Protest
Shortly after Young’s announcement, singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell followed suit, removing her catalogue from Spotify in protest of the platform’s promotion of harmful COVID misinformation.
These bold actions sparked a larger movement. Nils Lofgren, a multi-instrumentalist known for his work with Crazy Horse and the E Street Band, also demanded his songs be removed, sharing a statement on the Neil Young Archives supporting Young and urging others to do the same.
Soon after, folk rock legends Crosby, Stills, and Nash stepped forward. Bandmates David Crosby and Stephen Stills, alongside Graham Nash, backed Young’s protest and requested the removal of both their solo and group catalogues from Spotify, criticizing the company’s lack of social responsibility.
While members of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young have had disagreements in the past, they appear united in their stand against the COVID misinformation broadcast on Spotify’s flagship podcast.
