Gender Inequality in the Music Industry: Raising Awareness and Change

The gender inequality in music industry remains a major issue. This year, the #MeToo movement brought sexual harassment and misogyny into the spotlight. At the 60th Annual Grammy Awards, guests were encouraged to wear a white rose to show support. Despite the awareness, only 11 of 84 awards went to women. Forbes staffer Zack O’Malley Greenburg noted, “SZA, the most-nominated female act, went home without a single award.”

Women Still Underrepresented in Music and Corporate Roles

Institutionalized misogyny affects not only performers but also the corporate side of the music industry. With fewer women in offices, a self-perpetuating cycle of discrimination continues. Kim Kaupe, cofounder of ZinePak, stated, “I’m not going to keep begging and asking to have a seat at your table… I’m gonna build another table or find other tables that let me have a seat.”

Progress Through Awareness and Diversity

Awareness drives change. Dr. Stacy Smith, coauthor of a study on gender and ethnicity in music, analyzed the 600 most popular songs over the past five years. Only 22.4% of performers were women, but half of these were nonwhite. Diversity among female performers is thriving. Women supporting women can create powerful, lasting change.
